Will a possible tsunami affect Turkey?

Will a possible tsunami affect Turkey?

AFAD Earthquake and Risk Reduction General Manager Prof. Dr. Orhan Tatar, regarding the seismic activity in the Aegean Sea, "We anticipate that if the tsunami reaches our shores, it will not have a destructive effect," he said.

Prof. Dr. Tatar, Director of Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel, Deputy General Director of Meteorology Yüksel Yağan and METU Civil Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevdet Yalciner, AFAD mobile siren and announcement vehicle was deployed on the coast of Seferihisar district and made an examination in the Aegean Sea with a ship affiliated to the Coast Guard Command.

After the examination, Tatar made a statement to journalists and reminded that they had held evaluation meetings in Muğla, Aydın and Izmir.

Referring to the possibility of a tsunami that may occur after the earthquake, Tatar noted that:

"Especially as we come from the south to the north, that is, as we come further north from Muğla, we see that the danger of this tsunami along our coasts is decreasing more and more. But for example, if this tsunami effect occurs in different places in Muğla, Bodrum, Datca Peninsula, we predict that it will not come in a period of no more than an hour earlier. We show this as a result of the modeling we have done. We anticipate that if the tsunami reaches our shores, it will not have a devastating effect. As we come further north, especially as we come to the vicinity of Izmir, we can say that the impact of this will decrease even more or it will have almost no effect as we come to the region we are in today. In the event of a tsunami, it is possible to say very clearly that it will not pass to the north of Izmir."

Noting that the Kandilli Observatory and the Earthquake Research Institute will issue the tsunami warning to AFAD, Tatar said that after the warning reaches AFAD, they will announce it to citizens by text message, by more effective message methods or by announcement system if necessary.

Tatar, referring to the sea retreat in different regions in recent days,"It is worth saying that this is a meteorological event, emphasizing that it is not a harbinger of any earthquake." said.

What to do in case of emergency

AFAD Disaster Response General Manager Dr. Sadi Ergin also answered the journalists' question about what citizens should do when a warning comes with the emergency warning system.

Ergin stated that citizens should head inland from the water's edge if there is a warning, "In the event of a tsunami effect of a maximum of 1 or 1.5 meters, we will have taken these measures together with our citizens going inland. In the case of a volcanic eruption, a mask can also be used for this. He becomes protective. In addition, the hats of chimneys in houses can provide protection inside the house. It is recommended that our citizens head to closed areas. In this sense, we printed brochures. It is delivered to our citizens through our mukhtars." he spoke.

The meteorological team is observing the atmosphere

Deputy General Director of Meteorology Yüksel Yağan also stated that the southern regions of Turkey may be partially affected by the transport of particulate matter in a possible volcano eruption.

Yağan, who stated that they had established a team as the General Directorate of Meteorology, said, "We are constantly observing and monitoring the atmosphere on a 7-24 hour basis. We are watching the atmosphere in the volcano eruption special. In such a case, we will contact our AFAD immediately and try to ensure that our citizens are affected in the least possible way by the situation in question." said.

The Mummy with the Golden Tongue

The Golden-Tongued Mummy was discovered in the temple of Taposiris Magna, west of Alexandria, in early 2021, by a Doctor searching for the lost tomb of Cleopatra. It was discovered by a team of Egyptian and Dominican archaeologists led by Kathleen Martínez.
The mummy belongs to a woman, and the style of burial and artifacts surrounding the burial of this woman indicate that she was buried during a period when Egyptian and Greco-Roman cultural influences blended, creating a period when traditional Egyptian burial customs were practiced alongside Greek and Roman influences. Therefore, it is thought that he lived during the Ptolemaic - Greco-Roman Period. Archaeologists have not been able to determine his name, status or cause of death due to the poor state of preservation. However, the presence of the golden tongue indicates that he may have been an important person and, at the very least, someone connected with wealth and capable of an elaborate funeral. Considering that the burial ceremony was at the site of a temple of significant religious and political significance, this may mean that the woman was a nun or had a connection with the temple, but it is not yet known and is only an educated guess. Why did he have a golden tongue? In Egyptian religious texts, the gods are described as having golden skin, silver bones and lapis lazuli hair. Many temple reliefs and sculptures depict gods with golden-toned bodies, emphasizing their divine nature. Unlike other metals, gold does not rust and deteriorate over time. The Egyptians saw it as a symbol of the immortality and divine essence of the gods. This belief influenced burial customs. As it is known, the ancient Egyptians believed in preparing the dead for the hereafter. The golden tongue amulet or foil was therefore most likely placed in the mummy's mouth, especially with the gods of the Underworld, especially the god Osiris, the ruler of the Underworld. The golden tongue, therefore, will adorn his speech and allow him to speak with a "golden" and divine confidence in the judgment of his soul, protecting him with a safe passage to the celestial realm known to the Egyptians as the "Reed Field" and allowing him to speak with a "golden" and divine confidence.

AK Party Güçlükaya Neighborhood Organization Successfully Holds Weekly Meeting

The Güçlükaya Neighborhood Organization of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) successfully conducted its weekly meeting this week, emphasizing grassroots mobilization and organizational unity. The gathering, led by local branch president Nuran Şeyhan, underscored the party’s focus on maintaining robust local engagement even as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan prioritizes high-stakes diplomacy in the Far East.

KEY QUOTES:
Nuran Şeyhan, addressing members, stated: “As the AK Party Güçlükaya Neighborhood Organization, we held our routine weekly meeting, which proved highly productive thanks to the active participation of our members. We extend our gratitude to all our colleagues for their dedication.”

CONTEXT & ANALYSIS:

  1. Local Meets Global: While President Erdoğan’s recent visits to Japan, South Korea, and China dominate national headlines—focusing on trade deals, technology partnerships, and geopolitical alliances—the AK Party continues to reinforce its domestic foundations. The Güçlükaya meeting reflects the party’s dual strategy: advancing Turkey’s global stature while ensuring grassroots loyalty through hyper-local engagement.

  2. Grassroots Machinery: The AK Party’s neighborhood teşkilat (organizations) are critical to its political dominance, acting as hubs for voter outreach, issue advocacy, and community solidarity. These units often address localized concerns, from infrastructure projects to social aid, aligning with Erdogan’s narrative of “serving the nation” at all levels.

  3. Timing & Symbolism: The meeting’s emphasis on “productivity” and “unity” comes as Erdogan’s Far East tour aims to bolster Turkey’s economic resilience amid inflation challenges. Local activists, like those in Güçlükaya, are tasked with amplifying the government’s messaging on national stability and international prestige.

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS:

  • Domestic Cohesion: The AK Party’s ability to synchronize local activism with Erdogan’s global agenda highlights its organizational discipline, a key factor ahead of critical 2024 local elections.

  • Opposition Critique: Opposition parties argue that the government’s international ventures distract from domestic crises, but AK Party loyalists counter that Erdogan’s diplomacy strengthens Turkey’s position to address local needs.

CLOSING NOTE:
As Erdogan navigates complex alliances in Asia, the AK Party’s local units like Güçlükaya’s serve as reminders of its enduring domestic strategy: blending community-level presence with a grand vision of Turkey as a rising global power. This dual focus remains central to the party’s 20-year political hegemony.
