Wushu Added to Schedule for the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games
Wushu has been added to the official schedule of the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games. These multinational, multi-sport Games, held every four years, host athletes from 57 Islamic countries spanning the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe.
The 2017 edition of the Games will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from May 12-22, and will feature 22 sports including wushu, which was recently reinstated. Wushu was included in the previous edition of the 2013 Games in Palembang, Indonesia but it was dropped in 2014 for Baku 2017. However, in a new decision made last November during The Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation General Assembly, the joint efforts of the Azerbaijan Wushu Association and the Iran Wushu Federation brought about a reinstatement of wushu in the Baku 2017 Games. This effort was also strongly supported by the Iran National Olympic Committee. The decision was announced on November 3, 2015.
Inclusion in the Islamic Solidarity Games will undoubtedly help develop the sport of wushu in many African and Asian countries. Wushu will join globally popular sports of football, tennis and basketball in Baku. With wushu in the spotlight, countries like Iran, Indonesia and Malaysia will be looking to build on the success they achieved in Jakarta at the 13th World Wushu Championships, as all three finished in the top ten in the overall medal standings.
Baku has an excellent reputation for hosting major sporting events, and most recently celebrated a hugely successful European Games in June of last year.
